Abstract

Abstract The subject of the invention is a process for the manufacture of water-soluble condensation products of hydroxymethyl-phosphonium compounds and dicyandiamide, characterised in that (a) 1 mol of a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium compound is condensed with (b) 0.02 to 0.2 mol, preferably 0.05 to 0.15 mol, of an optionally methylolated dicyandiamide at 40° to 120°C, optionally in the presence of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-donating agent, and an inert organic solvent, and optionally subsequently further condensed at temperature of 100° to 150°C, and if appropriate free hydroxyl groups are at least partially etherified with at least one alkanol with 1 to 4 carbon atoms and if appropriate the salts of the condensation products are converted into the corresponding hydroxides. The condensation products are used for flameproofing organic fibre material, especially textiles.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 75 words
A water-soluble condensation product from tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium compound and dicyandiamide, produced by the process, comprising condensing a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium salt or tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium hydroxide with dicyandiamide or methylolated dicyandiamide, at a molar ratio of 1:0.02 to 0.2, at 40° to 120°C in the presence of an inert organic solvent or aqueous medium or in the melt, to give the condensation product, while simultaneously removing by distillation from the reaction mixture any water present or formed during the condensation.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 75 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
A product of claim 1, wherein further condensation occurs as the reaction temperature is elevated to 100° to 150°C after removal of the water.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
A product of claim 1, wherein the resulting product is further treated with an alkanol of 1 to 4 carbon atoms in an acid medium to effect partial or complete etherification.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
A product of claim 1, wherein reaction mixture further includes formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 13 words
A product of claim 1, wherein the tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium compound is treated with dicyandiamide.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
A product of claim 1, wherein the inert organic solvent is an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
A product of claim 1, wherein the molar ratio is 1:0.05 to 0.15.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
A product of claim 1, wherein the tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium salt is a tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium halide.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
A product of claim 8, wherein the tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium halide is tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium chloride.
