IN A PROCESS FOR PREPARING A CONCENTRATED TITANIUM MINERAL BY REDUCING A TITANIUM MINERAL WITH A REDUCING AGENT SUCH THAT THE IRON COMPONENTS OF THE MINERALS ARE SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED TO THE FE+2 STATE, AND THEREAFTER LEACHING THE REDUCED TITANIUM MINERAL WITH AN ACID LEACHING AGENT WHICH MINIMIZES THE FORMATION OF FINE PARTICULATE MATERIAL OF A PARTICLE SIZE DIAMETER LESS THAN 10U, THE IMPROVEMENT WHICH COMPRISES: LEACHING A REDUCED TITANIUM MINERAL AT A TEMPERATURE FROM 80*C TO THE BOILING POINT OF THE LEACHING AGENT BY FEEDING SAID REDUCED TITANIUM MINERAL HAVING A AVERAGE WEIGHT PARTICLE SIZE OF 50 - 300U, AND BY FEEDING THE ACID LEACHING AGENT AT A SUPERFICAL LINEAR VELOCITY (VOLUMETRIC FLOW RATE/SECTIONAL AREA OF LOWER) OF UI $ 0.004 DP + 0.15 CM/SEC, WHEREIN UI REPRESENTS THE SUPERFICIAL LINEAR VELOCITY OF THE ACID LEACHING AGENT AND DP REPRESENTS THE AVERAGE WEIGHT PARTICLE SIZE (U) OF THE TITANIUM MINERAL INTO A TOWER LEACHING APPARATUS UNDER FLUIDIZED CONDITIONS.
