Abstract

Abstract A method of assembly of a structural unit such as for instance a storage framework composed of a plurality of storage frame components assembled into a storage rack for use for instance in warehousing systems. The framework comprises generally vertical column members which in certain embodiments may be of hollow thin wall, polygonal configuration in horizontal cross section. Connecting members which may include load carrying means, are spaced vertically along the columns and define the storage volumes in the storage rack. The load carrying means comprise assemblies including elongated members extending laterally relative to the columns. Actuatable fastener means connect the connecting members, which may include the load carrying assemblies, to the columns, and means are provided for prestressing at least certain of the members by deforming the latter at their connections with the other members and in the vicinity of the fastener means upon tightening of the latter, whereby a high-strength, rigid assembly is produced.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 144 words
In a method of making a rigid connection in a structural unit such as a storage frame or the like, comprising, providing a generally vertically oriented load supporting column member, providing a connecting member in generally laterally extending abutting relation to said column member for connection to the latter by actuatable fastener means, at least one of said members at the connection comprising a deformable web, said web being adapted for coaction with said fastener means with at least a fastener receiving portion of said web spaced from the other of said members, coupling said connecting member to said column member by said actuatable fastener means and deforming said web outwardly adjacent said fastener means, and toward said other member by actuation of said fastener means, to accomplish prestressing of said web of said one member whereby the rigidity of said connection is enhanced.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 144 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said column member includes said web, said fastener means including an elongated shank secured adjacent one end thereof with said web, and wherein said deforming comprises bulging said web outwardly into conical-like configuration generally circumferentially relative to said shank and toward said connecting member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 60 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said connecting member includes said web, said fastener means including an elongated shank, said fastener receiving portion of said web including an opening therethrough through which extends said shank, and wherein said deforming comprises bulging said web outwardly into conical-like configuration generally circumferentially relative to said shank and toward said column member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 85 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said fastener means includes an elongated stud secured adjacent one end thereof to said column member so as to project laterally therefrom, providing threads on the other end of said stud, said coupling of said connecting member to said column member including passing the threaded end of said stud through a confronting opening in said connecting member and threading a nut-like fastener onto said projecting threaded end a predetermined amount to cause said deformation of said web.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
A method in accordance with claim 4 wherein said connecting member includes a plate section comprising said web, said opening being disposed in said plate section, said deforming comprising bulging said web outwardly into conical-like configuration generally circumferentially relative to said opening and said stud and toward said column member.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 122 words
In a method of making a rigid connection in a structural unit such as a storage frame or the like, comprising, providIng a generally vertically oriented load supporting column member having a deformable web, providing a connecting member in generally laterally extending abutting relation to said web of said column member, said connecting member comprising means for spacing at least a fastener receiving portion thereof from said web of said column member, coupling said connecting member to said column member by actuatable fastener means and deforming said web outwardly adjacent said fastener means, and toward said connecting member by actuation of said fastener means, to accomplish prestressing of said web of said column member whereby the rigidity of said connection is enhanced.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein the deformation and prestressing of said web of said column member includes deforming said web outwardly into conical-like configuration generally circumferentially of said fastener means.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 79 words
A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein said fastener means comprises an elongated stud which is threaded at least at one end thereof, and securing the other end of said stud to said web, whereby upon predetermined tightening actuation of an associated fastener on the threaded section of said stud, said web is deformed outwardly at the attachment of said stud to said web and generally circumferentially of said stud, thus prestressing said column web at said connection.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 54 words
A method in accordance with claim 7 wherein said connecting member comprises means spacing at least a portion of said web a predetermined lateral distance from said connecting member and in confronting relation thereto, and causing said outward conical-like deformation of said web until engagement of said conical-like deformation and said connecting member occurs.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 107 words
