Abstract
Abstract This invention relates to felts for use in papermaking machinery, comprising an underlayer made from relatively coarse, rigid, nondeformable fibers so that when the felt is compressed, as, for example, in the nip between press rolls, the constituent fibers of the underlayer form a semi-rigid lattice providing void volume for the reception and carrying of water through the press nip. Advantageously, such a structure may be used in combination with a surface layer made from relatively fine fibers for contacting the sheet of paper to be processed.
