Abstract

Abstract Disclosed are normally substantially colorless chromogenic 1hydroxy-1-(4-aminophenyl polymethine) naphthalan color precursor compounds having the following structural formula: WHEREIN EACH R represents either a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group having from one to five carbon atoms and wherein n is an integer from 1 to 3. These compounds are initially substantially colorless and are capable of becoming highly colored when brought into reactive contact with many conventional Lewis acid materials and the like. Accordingly these compounds are highly useful as a component of pressure-sensitive copying papers.
