Abstract

Abstract To chemically bind either impure or purified enzymes to polyurethane to produce insolubilized bound enzymes which are still enzymically active and which may be more stable than the original enzyme, and which can be reused without appreciable activity loss and whose physical characteristics can be varied depending on the application for which they are intended.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 45 words
THE METHOD OF PREPRAING A BOUND ENZYME THAT INCLUDES CONTACTING, PRIOR TO A SUBSEQUENT FOAMING STEP, AN ISOCYANATECAPPED POLYURETHANE WITH AN AQUEOUS DISPERSION OF AN ENZYME, UNDER FOAM-FORMING CONDITIONS, WHEREBY THE POLYURETHANE FOAMS AND THE ENZYME BECOMES INTEGRALLY BOUND TO THE THUS FORMED POLYURETHANE FOAM.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method according to claim 1 in which the resulting polyurethane foam is washed to remove unbound enzymes and to hydrolyze any unreacted isocyanate groups.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 45 words
The method according to claim 1 in which the isocyanate-capped polyurethane is the reaction product of toluene diisocyanate with a polyhydroxy compound of the group consisting of polyoxybutylene polyol polymer, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene polyol polymer, pentaerythritol, glycerol, trimethylol propane and polyoxypropylene polyol polymer.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method according to claim 3 in which the group member is polyoxythylene polyol polymer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method according to claim 1 in which the enzyme is selected from the group consisting of urease, cellulase, pectinase, papain, bromelain, chymotrypsin, trypsin, ficin, lysozyme, and glucose isomerase.
