Abstract

Abstract Novel tin containing flame retardants for synthetic polymers that exhibit reduced tin content simultaneously with effective flame retarding characteristics consist of one part by weight of hydrated stannic oxide in combination wtih four parts of a member selected from the group consisting of colemanite (calcium borate hexahydrate), zinc oxide and mixtures of zinc oxide and magnesium oxide. Polymer compositions containing these flame retardants possess improved flame retarding characteristics simultaneously with effective color stability in the presence of heat and at a substantial reduction in cost over polymers containing known flame retarding compositions.
