Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for lubricating a die structure employed in die casting operations, and die therefore, whereby a quantity of lubricant is injected under gas pressure into the die cavity, and in which the plunger runs of the die casting machine is provided with a chamber for receiving the die lubricant, which chamber communicates with the inner end of the plunger and thus through the metal supply shot sleeve with the die cavity, the lubricant being discharged from the plunger by gas under pressure into the die cavity, with the apparatus being constructed to effect discharge of lubricant into the die cavity when the members of the die are in a closed position, and the plunger is in a position blocking the pour hole in the shot sleeve.

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 345 words
A ram plunger for use in a die casting apparatus for providing lubrication of a die cavity associated therewith, comprising an elongated shank member and an axially aligned smooth walled cylindrical head member which has an external diameter substantially complemental to the internal diameter of the shot sleeve of such an apparatus, such head member, in use, being disposed for reciprocable movement in such a shot sleeve with such head member forming a closure therefor, said head member having a chamber therein arranged for communication with the inner end thereof, normally closed valve means, carried by said head member, for normally closing said chamber with respect to said inner end thereto, the shank member of said plunger having an elongated passageway therein which communicates with said chamber, said shank member having a transversely extending opening therein adjacent the outer end of said plunger and spaced a distance from the inner end of said plunger greater than the travel of the latter, in use, whereby such opening remains externally of such a shot sleeve, when said plunger is fully inserted therein, which opening communicates with said passageway and thus with said chamber, and is adapted to be connected to a lubricant line for the entry of a lubricant into said chamber, said shank member having another, similarly disposed transversely extending opening therein, which communicates with said passageway and thus with said chamber, and is adapted to be connected to a gas line for supplying a gas under pressure to said chamber, by means of which, in use, lubricant may be forced into said chamber and discharged past the valve means exteriorly of the chamber into such a shot sleeve and associated die cavity, said valve means comprising a valve member and resilient means biasing said valve member in a chamber-closing position witH respect to the inner end of said head member, with the gas pressure being operable to apply force on said valve member in opposition to the action of said resilient means to effect an opening of said valve for the discharge of lubricant therethrough.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 300 words
A ram plunger for use in a die casting apparatus for providing lubrication of a die cavity associated therewith, comprising a hollow cylindrical shank member and an axially aligned hollow cylindrical head member forming the inner end of said plunger, said head member having internal threads thereon engageable with external threads on the adjacent end of said shank member for detachably securing the two in rigid relation, which plunger, in use, is to be disposed for reciprocable movement in the shot sleeve of such an apparatus, said head member having a chamber therein and having an axially disposed port in the inner end face thereof providing communication between said chamber and the inner end face of said head member, normally closed valve means, carried by said plunger, for normally closing said chamber with respect to said inner end of said head member, said valve means comprising a valve member normally closing said port and movable outwardly to open the same, said valve member having an axially extending valve stem disposed in said plunger, and a compression spring encircling said valve stem having one end bearing on said head member and the other end seated on abutment-forming means carried by said valve stem operative to normally retain said valve member in closed position, said shank member having a passageway therein, opening on a portion thereof which, in use, remains externally of such a shot sleeve, which passageway communicates with said chamber for the entry of a lubricant therein, and said shank member having another, similarly disposed passageway therein, which communicates with said chamber, for supplying a gas under pressure thereto, by means of which, in use, lubricant in said chamber may be discharged past the valve member exteriorly of the chamber into such a shot sleeve and an associated die cavity.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 300 words
