Abstract

Abstract Two substantially immiscible fluids which are but sparingly soluble in sense that two phases of them forms when real amount of them as liquids are present together, in vapor forms, in each of which a third fluid is soluble, are condensed and before generation, and separation of phases formed is effected are intimately intermingled as condensing or condensed so as to more nearly reach equilibrim concentration of the third fluid in each of said two fluids upon liquid phases formation said third fluid normally, upon phase formation and separation, not reaching in any acceptable time its equilibrium concentration in each of said two immiscible fluids. In alkylation of hydrocarbons, e.g., in an alkylation of an isoparaffin with an olefin, in which an overhead hydrocarbon stream from a fractionator containing hydrocarbon, alkyl fluoride, and hydrofluoric acid is condensed forming a hydrocarbon phase and an acid phase, and the phases separated, the overhead, upon being condensed at least in part, is subjected to intimate admixing prior to forming two separate liquid phases and separating them each from the other. In one embodiment, the condensing fluids are vigorously admixed prior to permitting phases formation. In another, the phases already substantially formed are intimately admixed prior to separation of them, thus to ensure, upon separation of the phases, more nearly the equilibrium concentration of said third fluid in each of said two fluids. In a further embodiment, the formed, separated phases are intimately intermingled, phases again allowed to form and then again separated.
