Abstract

Abstract A sealing device is provided around a vertical shaft where it passes through a wall by which two spaces at different pressures are separated. The shaft is provided with an array of circular fins which extend outwardly into an annular rotatable drum coaxial with the shaft to nearly touch the wall of the drum farthest from the shaft. The drum also is provided with another array of circular fins which extend from the outer wall thereof into a stationary annular chamber to nearly touch the wall of the chamber farthest from the shaft. The drum can be rotated independently on the shaft by means of an annular electric motor surrounding the shaft. A layer of fluid is obtained by centrifugation against said walls respectively of the chamber and of the drum, when said motor is running. A seal is thus ensured by said fins penetrating said layers with their outer edges. The lowermost fin of said arrays is bent downward to provide a seal when neither the motor nor the pump are running.
