Abstract

Abstract This invention relates to a vitreous semiconductor comprising at least one metal and at least one non-metal which is solid at room temperature, the semiconductor having at least 0.5 atomic percent metal and a greater than stoichiometric percentage of non-metal. The invention also relates to a method for producing such semiconductors by co-evaporating the metal and the non-metal and simultaneously quenching said metal and said non-metal onto a substrate held at a temperature below the condensation point of either component.
