Pharmaceutical aromatic guanidine compositions and methods of using same

Abstract

Abstract Pharmaceutical compositions having biological activity and containing novel aromatic guanidine compounds having the formula: WHEREIN: R1 is hydrogen, alkyl having one to four carbon atoms, or alkoxy having one to four carbon atoms; R2 is hydroxy, hydroxymethyl, alkyl having one to four carbon atoms, alkoxy having one to four carbon atoms, acetyl or methanesulfonamido; or R1 and R2 are joined in a tetramethylene group or a pyrido group; or R2 is hydrogen when R1 is a moiety other than hydrogen; R3 is hydrogen, hydroxy, chloro, bromo, fluoro, alkyl having one to four carbon atoms, or alkoxy having one to four carbon atoms except that when R2 is hydroxy, R3 is also hydroxy and if R3 is chloro, bromo or fluoro, R1 will not be hydrogen; R4 is hydrogen, chloro, bromo, fluoro, alkyl having one to four carbon atoms, or alkoxy having one to four carbon atoms; and R5 is hydrogen or methyl. The guanidine compounds and their salts are shown to be active as vasoconstrictor agents and create useful pharmaceutical preparations when deployed with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for administration to a host, e.g., man, requiring vasoconstrictive therapy.
