Abstract

Abstract A module is provided which comprises a casing having an inlet and outlet face and a transition refractory material anchored in the casing which surrounds and contains a monolith or monoliths having longitudinal and transverse axes, which monolith or monoliths provide an unobstructed flow path between the inlet and outlet faces of the casing, the lowest compressive strength of the monolith measured perpendicular to a longitudinal axis being greater than the compressive strength of the transition refractory material.
