Abstract

Abstract A horizontal infeed conveyer advances a series of on-edge signatures toward a hopper. An inclined conveyer sequentially removes signatures from the series of on-edge signatures and advances signatures toward the hopper in an overlapping stream. Operation of the two conveyers is regulated by a detector to maintain at least a predetermined minimum quantity of signatures in the hopper. A follower member is urged into pressure engagement with the trailing end surface of the series of on-edge signatures to hold the trailing signatures upright. When additional on-edge signatures are to be added to the series of signatures, an operator positions the additional signatures in abutting engagement with a rearward surface of the follower member. He then grasps a handle and actuates a trigger to effect operation of a piston and cylinder assembly to raise the follower member. The raised follower member is then pulled rearwardly against the influence of a biasing device. Once the follower member has been moved rearwardly of the additional signatures, the trigger is released and the piston and cylinder assembly then moves the follower member slowly downwardly. The handle is released and the biasing device is effective to press the lowered follower member against the rearward or trailing end portion of the additional signatures.
