Abstract
Abstract An insulating and protective structure for frozen substrates wherein a layer of expanded perlite particles, each particle coated with a bituminous coating composition, is applied to the frozen substrate. This structure is designed particularly for application to substrates underlain with permafrost in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. It is designed to provide low thermal conductivity and to have sufficiently high compressive strength such that it will keep the substrate frozen even under thawing conditions and thus provide a base layer for roadways and other structures superimposed thereon.
