Abstract

Abstract An electrical control is provided with an insulated shaft extension. The insulated shaft extension is attached to a metal shaft rotatably supported in a bushing attached to the housing of the control. A hollow shaft portion of the insulated shaft extension is in concentric relationship with the metal shaft. Tabs are sheared from the hollow shaft portion to abut against a shoulder defined by a reduced diameter portion on the metal shaft. The metal shaft has a flat which mates with a flat formed in the hollow shaft portion to prevent relative rotation of the shafts. Deformable ribs extend along the flat in the hollow shaft portion to ensure engagement with the flat on the metal shaft.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 193 words
An electrical control comprising a base, a resistance path secured to the base, a driver of insulating material, a contactor constrained to move with the driver for making wiping contact with the resistance path, a metal shaft extending from said driver, a shoulder on a portion of said metal shaft and extending perpendicularly from the longitudinal axis of the shaft, an insulated shaft extension of deformable material and directly secured to said metal shaft, said insulated shaft extension comprising a hollow portion in telescopic relation with the portion of said metal shaft provided with the shoulder, external alignment means on the metal shaft cooperating with internal alignment means on the shaft extension, said means orienting the metal shaft to the shaft extension and preventing relative rotation therebetween, and at least one tab permanently deformed and extending inwardly from said hollow portion of the shaft extension into direct engagement with said shoulder and maintaining said hollow portion positively mechanically locked to said metal shaft, the outer surface of the hollow portion of the shaft extension being provided with an indentation resulting from the inward deformation of the tab into direct engagement with the shoulder.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 193 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
The control of claim 1 wherein said metal shaft has a reduced diameter portion forming said shoulder and the tab extends into the reduced diameter portion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
The control of claim 1 wherein the means on said metal shaft and said hollow portion comprise mating flats locking said metal shaft and extension against relative rotation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
The control of claim 1 wherein the insulated shaft extension comprises an insulated shaft portion extending from said hollow portion for engagement with an external force to move said shaft and attached driver.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
The control of claim 3 wherein the flat on said hollow portion has resilient or deforMable ribs extending therefrom to insure engagement with the flat on said metal shaft.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
The control of claim 1 wherein said metal shaft has a reduced diameter portion defining said shoulder and the end of said tab abuts against said shoulder.
