Abstract
Abstract A substantially entirely vitrified flux composition having flowidity and plastic deformation point suitable for use in the continuous casting of steel consists essentially of controlled proportions of alkali metal oxide, silica, calcium oxide, fluorine, and oxide of a Period IV metal having Atomic Number of 23-28, inclusive, desirably with phosphorus pentoxide and titanium dioxide. In a process for continuous casting of steel the exposed molten metal surface is covered with a layer of such composition.
