Abstract

Abstract A reciprocal action apparatus for adhesively binding together pages to form a book is described. The apparatus contains two basic components; a stationary support member and a movable carriage member. The stationary support member contains carriage drive means, a clutch assembly for engaging and disengaging the carriage drive means, a cover mounting assembly, an adhesive applicator and reservoir assembly and an elongated carriage bar member. The movable carriage member which includes a clamping assembly for holding together the pages being bound travels in a reciprocating manner along the elongated carriage bar member. In operation, the movable carriage member transports the pages being bound to a first station where they are tangentially contacted by a rotating adhesive applicator. Thereafter, a cover is applied by the cover mounting assembly at a second station. The finished book with cover is then removed from the clamping assembly. Specific inventive details and advantages are described hereafter.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 230 words
An adhesive reservoir and applicator assembly including, a. a reservoir having a bottom, a pair of elongate sides and a pair of transverse ends extending between said elongate sides; b. a pumping compartment situated in one end of said reservoir containing a cylindrical adhesive applicator rotatably mounted on an axle supported by said elongated sides, the length of said applicator being less than the width of said reservoir; c. a screen extending inwardly from an elongate side of said reservoir situated immediately in front of and upstream from said adhesive applicator thereby separating said pumping compartment from an intake compartment, the length of said screen being less than the width of said reservoir; d. a baffle extending from said screen toward an end of said reservoir away from said pumping compartment, said baffle separating said intake compartment from a discharge compartment; e. heating means associated with said reservoir to heat adhesive material to flow temperature; and f. adhesive temperature control means; whereby a first portion of said adhesive material is readily circulated by rotation of said applicator axle from the pumping compartment through said discharge and intake compartments and returned to said pumping compartment upon passing through said screen which thereby reduces internal air ebullition in said adhesive material, and whereby a second portion of said hot adhesive material is applied to the edge of pages by said adhesive applicator.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 230 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 70 words
The adhesive reservoir and applicator assembly as defined in claim 1 including an adhesive applicator blade assembly containing, a. a doctor blade in close proximity to a peripheral portion of said adhesive applicator which controls thickness of the laminate of adhesive material on the surface of said applicator; and b. a scraper blade having a flat elongated blade section for removing excess adhesive material from the edges of a book.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
The apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein said scraper blade is made from a material having a low coefficient of friction with respect to said adhesive material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
The apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein said scraper blade is made from a material selected from the group consisting of teflon and nylon.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 57 words
The apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein said scraper blade includes a transverse elongated heat conductor section extending downwardly from said blade section into said reservoir containing hot adhesive material whereby said scraper blade is heated by heat conducted from said hot adhesive material in said reservoir through said heat conductor extensions to said scraper blade.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
The adhesive reservoir and applicator assembly as defined in claim 2 wherein said scraper blade is adjustably mounted on the upper flat surface of said doctor blade.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
The adhesive reservoir and applicator assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein said pumping compartment includes vertically disposed baffle guides positioned between said screen and said adhesive applicator.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
The adhesive reservoir and applicator assembly defined in claim 1 wherein the surface of said adhesive applicator contains lands and grooves.
