Abstract

Abstract A carport parking device is disclosed wherein the cars are carried in a generally rectangular path around a frame. In such devices the vehicles must change direction at vertical and horizontal junctions of the framework and the present invention is primarily directed to an improved structure for the corners of such parking devices wherein the carriers make a smooth transition from one direction to the next.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 301 words
In a parking device wherein a plurality of car carriers move on a generally rectangular path with means for moving said car carriers around said path while maintaining the car carriers in a horizontal plane at all times, the improvement comprising: a. a first set of four sprockets, said sprockets being located at the four corners of a first rectangular path, b. a second set of four sprockets, said sprockets being located at the four corners of a second rectangular path, c. said first and second sets of four sprockets being congruent and having the same top and bottom horizontal planes but being offset laterally with respect to each other, d. a first chain trained around the first set of sprockets, and a second chain trained around the second set of sprockets. e. a plurality of car carriers, each of said carriers being of a generally flat rectangular configuration with relatively long side members and relatively short end members, f. a crank shaft extending from each of said carriers at one end thereof, each of said crank shafts having a crank arm extending from the crank shaft at right angles to the crank shaft, g. the length of said crank shafts being substantially equal to the distance by which the first and second sets of sprockets are offset laterally to each other, h. the terminal end of each crank arm having a crank pin extending therefrom, said pin being generally parallel to said crank shaft, i. means for pivotally attaching each of said crank shafts to fixed positions on said first chain, j. means for pivotally attaching each crank pin to fixed positions on said second chain while maintaining each crank arm horizontal, and k. means for moving said first and second chains around said first and second sets of sprockets.
