Abstract

Abstract Activated carbons having uniformly distributed active metal sites are described. A process for making the carbons of this invention comprises, precipitating a lignin solution with various transition metal salts to form a metal lignate slurry, drying the precipitated metal lignate, carbonizing and activating the metal lignate to produce activated carbon with active metal sites. The activated carbons with active metal sites produced according to this process are particularly characterized by having the metal sites uniformly distributed throughout the carbon particle and are useful for catalytic and sorption applications.
