Abstract

Abstract The inlet opening of a chamber is connected to the exhaust manifold of an internal combustion engine so that the combustion products pass through the chamber to an exit opening. The chamber contains a pair of baskets which are open at their upstream ends and closed at their downstream ends. The sides of the baskets are made up of thin copper wire strands placed side by side. The exhaust from the engine is brought into the first basket and the pulses of pressure from the engine exhaust bows the wires outward in a pulsating manner to alternately open and close the spaces between the wires allowing the gases to pass through the spaces. Atmospheric air is introduced into the first basket to mix with the combustion products. The gases emanating from the first basket are introduced into the open end of the second basket and pass through the walls of the second basket in the same manner as the first basket, and then on to the exhaust opening. A feedback conduit leading from the area between the two baskets is brought to the carburetor to feed a minor part of the products within the chamber to the carburetor air inlet opening. Blue sparks are provided at the region of the chamber between the two baskets and also at the carburetor inlet opening. The effect of the small pieces or finely divided copper and the sparks is to produce chemical reactions which result in nearly eliminating from the exhaust opening from the chamber, unburned hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 150 words
A pollution control device for reducing the quantity of pollutant mixed with the gaseous products of combustion of hydrocarbon fuel in an internal combustion engine, comprising: a chamber having an inlet for entry of the combustion products into the chamber and an outlet for exhaust of gases from the chamber so that gases flow through the chamber from the inlet to the outlet; a plurality of baskets arranged in tandem and spaced from each other, each basket being open at its upstream end and closed at its downstream end; each basket having a side wall comprising copper which provides openings for passage of gas therethrough; means for introducing atmospheric air into a first of said baskets located upstream from a second of said baskets; means comprising spaced electrodes forming a spark gap located in the region between said first and second baskets; and means producing intermittent sparks across said gap.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 150 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A device according to claim 1 in which rock salt is positioned in the chamber outside said first basket.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
A device according to claim 2 in which the rock salt is held in copper mesh container means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A device according to claim 1 in which rock salt is positioned in the chamber outside said second basket.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A device according to claim 4 in which the rock salt is in a copper mesh container means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 47 words
A device according to claim 1 in which a fan blade is positioned upstream from the entrance of the first basket, said fan blade being rotatable when gaseous combustion products from the engine pass by it, thereby agitating mixing the gaseous combustion products and the atmospheric air.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 46 words
A device according to claim 1 in which said inlet is connected to the exhaust of an internal combustion engine having firing cylinder and piston means, and means causing a spark to jump across the gap each time a charge of fuel fires in a cylinder.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 12 words
A device according to claim 1 in which baskets are tubular shaped.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 64 words
A device according to claim 1 in which the side walls of each basket comprises stretches of copper wire side by side, whereby when the interior of the basket is subjected to pulsation of gas pressure emanating from the exhaust from the engine the wires are bowed outwardly with refrence to the interior of the basket, thereby creating and enlarging openings between the stretches.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 70 words
A device according to claim 1 in which the means for introducing atmospheric air into a first of said baskets located upstream from a second of said baskets comprises conduit means extending through said baskets from the region of said outlet to the first of said baskets, said conduit means being in communication with atmospheric air at said region of the outlet, and delivering said air into said first basket.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 25 words
A device according to claim 10 in which means connected with said conduit means blows atmospheric air through said conduit means into said first basket.
