Abstract

Abstract A structural joint construction for connecting a first member of composite material to a second member which may be of composite material or of some other material. The construction enables tensile, compressive, torsional, and bending loads to be transmitted from the first member to the second member with a high degree of efficiency. One end of the first member is in abutting relationship with a free end of the second member such that a plurality of ends of first filament material integral with the core extends beyond its end and overlies the outer surface of the second member. The outer surface of the second member is contoured to include a central portion of minimal cross-sectional area bounded by opposing portions of greater cross-sectional areas. Other filament material is wrapped around the first filament material in a direction transverse to the axes of the first and second members such that the ends of the first filament material conform to the contour of the outer surface of the second member and are held fast to the second member.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 122 words
A method of forming a structural joint comprising the steps of providing first and second members having an end-to-end relationship wherein the first member is a composite material having a first filamentary material extending therefrom and a second member wherein the first filamentary material overlaps the second member, heating an expansible second filamentary material to a temperature significant enough to affect an expansion of the second filamentary material, winding the said second filamentary material in a transverse direction around the overlapped first filamentary material of the composite first member and second member, securing the second filamentary material so as to prevent the second filamentary material from unwinding, and allowing the second filamentary material to cool, thereby contracting to form a solid joint.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method recited in claim 1 wherein the second filamentary material is metal wire.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
The method recited in claim 2 wherein the winding of the second filamentary material includes applying tension to the second filamentary material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 63 words
The method recited in claim 1 wherein the second member includes a connection region adjacent an end thereof having a central portion of minimal cross-sectional area intermediate opposing portions of greater cross-sectional area and an outer surface which expands gradually and smoothly from said central portion to at least said opposing portion adjacent the end of the second member butting the first member.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
The method of claim 4 including the step of applyiny an uncured resin layer over the ends of the first filamentary material between the opposing portions of greater cross-sectional area of the connection region of the second member prior to the step of heating and winding the second filamentary material.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 193 words
A method of forming a structural joint comprising the steps of providing first and second members in end-to-end relationship wherein the first member is of a composite material including a plurality of ends of first filamentary material extending beyond the end of the first member, and wherein, the second member includes a connecting region adjacent an end thereof having a central portion of minimal cross-sectional area intermediate opposing portions of greater cross-sectional area and an outer surface which expands gradually and smoothly from said central portion to at least the opposing portion adjacent the end abutting the first member, laying the ends of the first filamentary material onto and around the outer surface of the surface of the connection region so as to overlap and conform to the contoured surface thereof, heating an expansible second filamentary material to a temperature significant enough to affect an expansion of the second filamentary material, winding said filamentary material of the composite first member and second member, securing the second filamentary material so as to prevent the second filamentary material from unwinding and allowing the second filamentary material to cool thereby contracting to form a solid joint.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 38 words
The method recited in claim 6 wherein the second filamentary material is heated to a temperature of approximately 500*F prior to the step of winding it around the overlapped ends of the first filamentary material and second member.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method recited in claim 6 including a final step of coating the outer most layer of the second filamentary material with an abrasion and corrosion resistent material.
