Abstract

Abstract Multifunctional peroxycarbonate esters are prepared by reacting a salt of a linear copolymer, having acid functionality, with a carbonate under oxidizing conditions. The process of this invention can be adapted to permit the in situ generation of the peroxycarbonate ester in a suspension, solution or emullsion polymerization system. Peroxycarbonate esters prepared in this manner are useful as initiators in the free radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, as well as agents for the cross-linking of linear polymeric chains.
