Abstract

Abstract The invention pertains to a process for creating triggered stop barriers as an extinguishing means in the galleries of various underground works. It comprises the expulsion, by expansion of gas or of steam under pressure by means of an appropriate source of energy, of an extinguishing product housed in the cells of a mass of a reticular material. The invention further pertains to devices for working above-mentioned process.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 62 words
The method of extinguishing fires and explosions in an underground passage, comprising the steps of: positioning a mass of frangible cellular material at a predetermined location in said passage; filling the cells of said material with a fluent extinguishing medium; and creating an internal pressure in said mass sufficient to expel the extinguishing medium therefrom and disperse the same in said passage.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 62 words
The method of extinguishing fires and explosions in an underground passage, comprising the steps of: positioning a mass of frangible cellular material at a predetermined location in said passage; filling the cells of said material with a fluent extinguishing medium; and creating an internal pressure in said mass sufficient to expel the extinguishing medium therefrom and disperse the same in said passage.
Claim 3
Independent Claim 62 words
The method of extinguishing fires and explosions in an underground passage, comprising the steps of: positioning a mass of frangible cellular material at a predetermined location in said passage; filling the cells of said material with a fluent extinguishing medium; and creating an internal pressure in said mass sufficient to expel the extinguishing medium therefrom and disperse the same in said passage.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 62 words
The method of extinguishing fires and explosions in an underground passage, comprising the steps of: positioning a mass of frangible cellular material at a predetermined location in said passage; filling the cells of said material with a fluent extinguishing medium; and creating an internal pressure in said mass sufficient to expel the extinguishing medium therefrom and disperse the same in said passage.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 54 words
A device for extinguishing fires and explosions in an underground passage, comprising: a mass of frangible cellular material; a fluent extinguishing medium filling the cells of said mass; and pressure means embedded within said mass for creating internal pressure therein to expel said medium from said mass and disperse the same in said passage.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 54 words
A device for extinguishing fires and explosions in an underground passage, comprising: a mass of frangible cellular material; a fluent extinguishing medium filling the cells of said mass; and pressure means embedded within said mass for creating internal pressure therein to expel said medium from said mass and disperse the same in said passage.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
A device as defined in claim 2 wherein said cellular mass is a body of polyurethane foam.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
A device as defined in claim 2 wherein said cellular mass has between 5 and 50 cells per linear inch.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
A device as defined in claim 2 wherein said extinguishing medium is a liquid.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 14 words
A device as defined in claim 2 wherein said extinguishing medium is a powder.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 15 words
A device as defined in claim 2 wherein said pressure means is an explosive device.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 29 words
A device as defined in claim 7 wherein said explosive device comprises a detonator cord extending through said mass and having a detonator on at least one end thereof.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 20 words
A device as defined in claim 2 including an envelope of readily rupturable material enclosing said mass of cellular material.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 21 words
A device as defined in claim 2 wherein said mass is an elongated mass positioned to extend along an underground passage.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 25 words
A device as defined in claim 2 wherein a plurality of said devices are positioned to define a row thereof extending along an underground passage.
