Abstract

Abstract A planetary gear train comprises a combination of three planetary gear assemblies each having an externally toothed sun gear, an internally toothed ring gear, planet pinions rotatable between the sun and ring gears, and a pinion carrier connected to the planet pinions. The individual planetary gear assemblies are controlled to provide four forward and one reverse speed gear ratios through selective actuation of a first clutch associated with the ring gear of the first planetary gear assembly, a second clutch associated with the sun gears of the first and second planetary gear assemblies, a first brake also associated with the sun gears of the first and second planetary gear assemblies, a second brake associated with the ring gear of the second planetary gear assembly and either the sun gear or the pinion carrier of the third planetary gear assembly, and a third brake associated with either the pinion carrier or the ring gear of the third planetary gear assembly.
