Abstract

Abstract 1. In a wideband matched filter communication system for transmitting digl information identified by initial sharp pulses occurring at regular intervals from a transmitter, thru a filter network and a communication channel subject to propagation of multiple signals according to a pattern which is repeated in similar form for the signal from each successive pulse, to a receiver, said filter network having a linear overall phasefrequency characteristic, and being distributed between said transmitter and said receiver, the overall characteristics of portions at transmitter and receiver each being non-linear, means for utilizing the multiple signals from each pulse and minimizing noise, comprising, a delay and feedback network having a delay time substantially equal to said intervals and a gain slightly less than unity, to which said signals are applied to integrate the present signals at maximum amplitude and previous signals at progressively lesser amplitude and thus provide a stored representation of the prevailing multiple signal pattern, a multiplier circuit supplied by inputs from said stored representation and the present signal to produce an output tending to emphasize true multiple signals and to exclude random noise, and an integrator circuit to combine the multiple signals corresponding to an input pulse, whereby an output of maximum signal-to-noise ratio is obtained.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 65 words
A system as in claim 1 wherein plural sets of filters are used for alternative signals, both involving similar multiple signal patterns, in which both such signals are applied to the delay and feedback circuit and the common output applied to separate multipliers for both the individual alternative signals, whereby the alternative signals both contribute to the stored representation to further improve the signal-to-noise ratio.
