Abstract A novel sensitizer effectively sensitizing an organic photoconductor for electrophotography comprising the dimerized cyanine dye having a carbazole nucleus represented by the following general formula WHEREIN R1 represents a hydrogen atom; an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms; an alkyl group substituted by a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group or a cyano group; or an acyl group substituted by a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, or a cyano group; R2 represents -(CH2)n (where n is a positive integer of 2 to 6) or CH2-; R3 represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a nitro group, an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms, -OR'', or -COOR'' (where R'' is an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms); and X represents an anion residue.
