Abstract
Abstract Pullulan esters are prepared by the reaction of pullulan with aliphatic or aromatic fatty acids or their derivatives in the presence of suitable solvents and/or catalysers. Said pullulan esters can be shaped by compression molding or extrusion at elevated temperature or by evaporation of solvents from their solutions to form shaped bodies, such as films or coatings which are practically impermeable to atmospheric oxygen in thin layers and unaffected by oils and fats so as to provide valuable packaging materials for food, pharmaceuticals, and other oxygen sensitive materials.

A method of making a shaped body as claimed in claim 3 which comprises mixing said pullulan ester with said amylose, said gelatin and a volatile solvent, imparting a shape to the solution so produced and substantially removing the solvent from the shaped solution.
