Abstract

Abstract A carbon-fiber-reinforced aluminum composite material comprises an aluminum matrix containing an alloying element reactive with carbon to form a carbide and carbon fibers having a tensile strength larger than that of the aluminum matrix. The amount of the carbon fibers is larger than the critical volume ratio that is the lower limit required for reinforcing the aluminum matrix. The carbide of the alloying element is formed on the interface between the carbon fibers and the matrix thereby to form a close adherence between the aluminum matrix and the carbon fibers.
