Abstract

Abstract Coarse sodium bicarbonate crystals of controlled size are produced by spraying an aqueous mixture of soda ash and sodium bicarbonate into an atmosphere containing CO2 in a carbonating zone; simultaneously evaporating water from the aqueous mixture; collecting the resulting slurry of bicarbonate crystals in mother liquor in a crystallization zone; removing therefrom a slurry stream of coarse sodium bicarbonate crystals; separating coarse crystals of sodium bicarbonate from said slurry and recycling the resultant mother liquor. The separated crystals are suitably washed, dried and sized to obtain the sodium bicarbonate product.
