Abstract

Abstract An improved electrolytic cell comprises a metal anode such as lithium, sodium, zinc, or the like, a cathode such as monofluorographite or the like and an organic electrolyte such as propylene carbonate which contains an inorganic salt such as lithium perchlorate disposed between and in contact with the spaced electrodes. A particulate water scavenger is disposed in association with the electrolyte and/or at least one of the electrodes for the purpose of maintaining the water level of the electrolyte below that which interferes with the optimal electrical performance of the cell. In one embodiment, the scavenger comprises a porous sheet disposed on a surface of the anode and exposed to the electrolyte. In another embodiment, the scavenger is disposed within the cathode. Preferably, the scavenger comprises molecular sieve material, hydrophilic cellulosic material or the like.
