Abstract

Abstract Mined coal of all grades contains numerous solid impurities such as slate, shale, and iron pyrites. The treatment of such coal with certain high vapor pressure chemical comminutants such as liquid anhydrous ammonia at - 33*C renders the coal into smaller particle sizes and separates it from its inherent impurities by means of the apparatus of the invention which includes a reactor receiving the coal to which is applied a chemical agent such as liquid anhydrous ammonia, and which separates the impurities from the coal and recovers the ammonia from both for reuse in the apparatus.
