Abstract

Abstract A machine to form compact rolls of hay of substantial size by picking up a swath or windrow of hay and the like from a field, engage it by cooperating upper and lower endless flexible aprons driven in suitable directions to coil the hay into a compact roll while supported upon floor means mounted stationarily in the bottom of the machine to effect baling of all the hay without loss upon the ground. When the roll type bale of hay reaches a predetermined diameter, the upper apron raises to stop driving the same and provide an exit and the lower apron assists in ejecting the bale onto the ground, or the machine can transport it to a desired location for discharge, if desired. The lower apron has aggressive type lugs thereon which disengage the roll type bale adjacent the discharge end of the machine and the machine and the floor means has a shallow valley to assist in positioning roll type bales relative to said floor while being formed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 257 words
A mobile hay roll-forming machine comprising in combination, a mobile frame, lower endless apron means in the lower portion of said frame having an upper course extending substantially horizontally, means operable to move said upper course rearwardly in said machine, means to deliver a swath of agricultural product to the forward end of said upper course of said lower apron means, upper roll forming means in said machine operable to cooperate with said endless lower apron means to form said swath of product into a roll, said lower endless apron comprising a plurality of endless flexible members spaced from each other transversely across said machine, bottom means extending across the lower portion of said machine and having guide means for the upper courses of said endless flexible members extending longitudinally of said machine relative to the direction of movement thereof along a field, upstanding lugs on said flexible members engageable with the lower surface of a roll of said product and operable to move the same rearwardly while said upper roll-forming means engages and moves the upper surface of said roll forwardly and thereby revolves said roll about its axis while supported in said machine, and means associated with said guide means and projecting rearwardly beyond the upper course of said lower endless apron and comprising support means for a roll of agricultural product said rearwardly projecting means being spaced transversely to provide spaces through which said upper courses of said flexible members move downward and thereby positively disengage said lugs from a roll of said product.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 257 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 63 words
The machine according to claim 1 in which said endless flexible members comprise chains, and said rearwardly projecting means through which said chains pass comprising a plurality of plates spaced apart adjacent side edges thereof in a direction transversely across the lower portion of said mobile frame to provide said slotted means through which the chains of said endless apron pass as aforesaid.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 95 words
The machine according to claim 2 in which said bottom means comprises a floor panel supported rigidly relative to the lower portion of said mobile frame, and said floor panel having a shallow valley formed therein between the forward and rear ends of said machine, the axis of said valley extending transversely between the opposite sides of said machine, said valley being operable to facilitate the positioning of a roll of said product and maintaining the same at a desired location in said machine while being rotated about its axis to increase the size thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The machine according to claim 2 in which said plates at the rearward end of said bottom extend upward and rearward from one side of said shallow valley.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 123 words
The machine according to claim 1 in which said lugs comprise blades extending perpendicularly from said chains, the leading edges of said blades relative to the direction of movement thereof extending substantially vertically to the line of movement of the upper courses of said chains and the upper edges of said blades in said upper courses of said chains extending downward and rearward, whereby the leading edges of said blades afford aggressive engagement with the lower surface of a roll of said agricultural product and the shape of the upper edges of said blades facilitating the withdrawal of said blades from said roll when said chains pass through said slotted supporting means adjacent the rearward ends of said upper courses of said chains.
