Abstract
Abstract Tetrahydrofuran is produced in high yields by hydrogenation of maleic or fumaric acid or their derivatives or gamma butyrolactone in the presence of a catalyst which is an intimate mixture of metallic nickel with metallic cobalt and/or iron and an oxide of aluminum, boron, beryllium, magnesium, calcium, manganese, chromium, zinc, zirconium, molybdenum, thorium, tungsten, titanium, or vanadium, with or without addition of metallic copper. gamma -butyrolactone, when formed as a byproduct, and unreacted starting material may be recycled, and no significant amounts of other by-products are formed at relatively low temperatures and pressures.
