Claim 1
Independent Claim 57 words
AN INORGANIC PIGMENT OR FILLER MATERIAL CONSISTING OF A PARTICULATE INORGANIC MINERAL OTHER THAN TITANIUM DIOXIDE HAVING AN ACIDIC SURFACE COATING WITH A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF ACIDIC SITES WITH PKA VALUES OF LESS THAN 2.8 WHEREIN THE ACIDIC SURFACE COATING COMPRISES AT LEAST ONE MATERIAL SELECTED FROM THE OXIDES, HYDRATED OXIDES, SILICATES AND PHOSPHATES OF MULTIVALENT METALS.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 57 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 45 words
A pigment or filler material as claimed in claim 1 wherein the mineral is selected from the group consisting of magnesium silicate minerals, clay minerals, inorganic pigments, colourants, extenders and fillers, silica and siliceous materials, metal powders and fibres, and natural and synthetic mineral fibres.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
A pigment or filler material as claimed in claim 1, wherein the multivalent metal is selected from iron, cobalt, nickel, aluminium, chromium, titanium, tin, zirconium, and vanadium.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
A pigment or filler material as claimed in claim 1, which includes silica or other non-metallic oxide.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A pigment or filler material as claimed in claim 1, wherein the acidic surface coating is an aluminosilicate.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 134 words
A method for producing an inorganic pigment or filler material other than titanium dioxide having an acidic coating which comprises the steps of: a. forming on the surface of the particles of a particulate inorganic mineral pigment or filler other than titanium dioxide a coating of a compound of a multivalent metal which is or can be converted into an oxide, hydrated oxide, silicate or phosphate of the metal; b. forming the coated particles into a slurry in an aqueous medium at a pH of less than 5.0; c. recovering the particles from the slurry; and d. heating the particles to a temperature of from 100*C to 800*C; thereby to produce an acidic surface coating on the particles which coating has a significant number of acidic sites with pKa values of less than 2.8.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method as claimed in claim 6, wherein the multivalent metal compound is an aluminum silicate produced by coating the particles with a solution of an aluminum salt and a silicate solution.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method as claimed in claim 6, wherein in step (d) the particles are heated to a temperature of from 120* to 400*C.
