Abstract

Abstract The specification discloses a medical suction apparatus including a generally rigid container which supports a flexible drainage bag therein. A pair of conduits extend from the lid of the container for connection to a patient area to be drained and for connection to a vacuum source. In operation, fluid is drawn from the area to be drained and collected within the drainage bag. A flexible float valve is connected to the underside of the lid and is operable upon fluid overflow conditions to obstruct the vacuum conduit to prevent fluid from being drawn into the vacuum source.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 164 words
A float valve operable between open and closed positions in response to fluid level within a fluid container having a lid with a vacuum inlet formed therethrough comprising: a projection extending from the underside of the lid an elongated strip of flexible material having low fluid absorption characteristics, a portion of said flexible strip having structure for being frictionally and detachably connected to said projection extending from the underside of the lid, said strip having a length greater than the distance from said projection to the vacuum inlet said strip having a free end which normally hangs below the vacuum inlet due to bending of said flexible strip when the fluid level within the fluid container is below a predetermined level, said free end having sufficiently low fluid absorption characteristics to float on the fluid when the fluid reaches the predetermined level within the container to bend upwardly to obstruct the vacuum inlet to prevent the fluid from being drawn through the vacuum inlet.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 164 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
The float valve of claim 1 wherein said strip comprises cellular plastic material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
The float valve of claim 1 wherein said strip includes a generally U-shaped cutout portion therethrough which defines a connecting tab, said connecting tab being removably connected to the underside of the lid.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The float valve of claim 3 wherein said connecting tab includes an aperture therein for receiving a projection from the underside of the lid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 97 words
A float valve for connection to the underside of a canister lid comprising: an elongate strip of flexible material having low fluid absorption characteristics, said strip having a free end for obstructing a port through said lid during fluid overflow conditions, said strip further having a generally curved end for abutting with a fluid inlet downwardly projecting from the underside of said lid, a generally U-shaped cutout portion in said strip defining a tab extending toward said free end of said strip, said tab including an aperture for receiving a projection from the underside of said lid.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 97 words
A float valve for connection to the underside of a canister lid comprising: an elongate strip of flexible material having low fluid absorption characteristics, said strip having a free end for obstructing a port through said lid during fluid overflow conditions, said strip further having a generally curved end for abutting with a fluid inlet downwardly projecting from the underside of said lid, a generally U-shaped cutout portion in said strip defining a tab extending toward said free end of said strip, said tab including an aperture for receiving a projection from the underside of said lid.
