Abstract

Abstract Method of manufacturing and confirming or establishing preselected dimensional relationships along selected surface portions of assemblies. As disclosed, preferred form includes selecting dimensional relationship establishing means having coefficient of thermal expansion different than that of the selected surface portion defining material of the assembly; placing such means in proximity to the selected surface; transferring heat to or from such means and surface material to differentially expand or contract such means and surface material; forcing the surface to conform to such means, transferring heat relative to such means and surface to return the same to an initial thermal state; and separating such means and surface portions. Transferring heat to or from the selected surface portions and means may advantageously be performed concurrently with other manufacturing steps. The selected surface portions may (particularly in the case of a dynamoelectric machine assembly) include bore defining surfaces, outer peripheral surfaces, restricted slot entrance surfaces and winding surfaces, to name but a few.
