Abstract

Abstract A coated fabric is prepared by coating a one-package cyclic nitrile carbonate/polyol/catalyst system with appropriate fillers and pigments onto a release surface, such as a teflon coated surface, heating the coating at an elevated temperature to cause foaming and partial gelling or curing of the film, placing a substrate fabric over the partially foamed and cured coating, applying pressure to the surface of the fabric-covered coating sufficient to crush the thermoplastic foam and allow the same to fuse into a continuous film, heating the resulting laminate to finish cure the foamed coating, and, finally, stripping the release surface from the finished coated fabric.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 97 words
A METHOD FOR PREPARING A POLYURETHANE COATED FABRIC; COMPRISING, COATING A ONE-PACKAGE CYCLIC NITRILE CARBONATE/POLYOL COMPOSITION TO A RELEASE SURFACE, HEATING THE COATED RELEASE SURFACE AT A TEMPERATURE SUFFICIENT TO CAUSE FOAMING AND PARTIAL CURING OF THE COATING IN DIRECT CONTACT OVER THE FOAMED AND PARTIALLY CURED COATING IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE COATING, APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE FABRIC-COVERED COATING SUFFICIENT TO CRUSH THE FOAM AND FUSE THE SAME INTO A CONTINUOUS FILM; HEATING THE RESULTING COMPRESSED LAMINATE TO A TEMPERATURE SUFFICIENT TO COMPLETE CURING OF SAID COATING; AND STRIPPING THE COATED FABRIC FROM SAID RELEASE SURFACE.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the cyclic nitrile carbonate is adipodinitrile carbonate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the polyol is a member of the group consisting of polyesters, polyethers, mixed polyester-polyethers and mixtures of these.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the release surface is poly(tetrafluoroethylene).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the coated release surface is foamed and partial cured at a temperature of about 80* to about 200* C. for about 1 to 30 minutes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the coated release surface is foamed and partial cured at a temperature of about 120* to about 150* C. for about 1 to 3 minutes.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said pressure is about 50 to 100 psig.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the compressed laminate is cured at a temperature of about 80* to about 200* C. for about 1 to about 30 minutes.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 29 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the compressed laminate is cured at a temperature of about 120* to about 150* C. for about 7 to 10 minutes.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the release surface is coated to a thickness of about 8 to 10 mils.
