Abstract

Abstract A method and apparatus for compression molding articles of elastomeric material is disclosed. Each article is molded in a separate, portable mold which is sequentially conveyed to stations which perform the process steps of: (1) preparing, (2) loading the open mold, (3) partially closing the mold, (4) completely closing and locking the mold under pressure, (5) heating the mold to cure the elastomeric material, (6) unlocking the mold, and (7) opening the mold, stripping out the article and locking the mold open for step number (1).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 103 words
An apparatus for compression molding articles comprising mold carrier means having molds thereon for molding a blank part, a first indexing means for transporting said carrier means, a curng oven, a second indexing means within said oven for transporting said carrier means within said oven, and means for alternately translating said carrier means from said first indexing means to said second indexing means and back to said first indexing means, said first and second indexing means and said translating means moving said carrier means through stations to close said carrier means, lock under molding pressure, heat, open, and extract a molded part therefrom.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 103 words
An apparatus for compression molding articles comprising mold carrier means having molds thereon for molding a blank part, a first indexing means for transporting said carrier means, a curng oven, a second indexing means within said oven for transporting said carrier means within said oven, and means for alternately translating said carrier means from said first indexing means to said second indexing means and back to said first indexing means, said first and second indexing means and said translating means moving said carrier means through stations to close said carrier means, lock under molding pressure, heat, open, and extract a molded part therefrom.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 114 words
An apparatus for compression molding articles according to claim 1 wherein said carrier means comprise a base, a lower platen connected to said base, a first mold half on said lower platen, vertical guide means on said base, an upper platen slidably received on said guide means, a second mold half operatively connected to said upper platen, bias means interposed between said upper platen and said second mold half and locking means on said upper platen whereby said second mold half is closeable against said bias means and against said first mold half and lockable under molding pressure and whereby said bias means maintains said mold under pressure until said locking means is released.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 104 words
An apparatus for compression molding articles according to claim 2 wherein said carrier means further comprises an extracting plate, slidably received upon said guide means and defining a bore in said plate whose diameter is less than the diameter of a protruding portion of a part to be extracted from said first mold half, said plate normally lying beneath said mold half, and wherein said extracting station comprises means for elevating said plate from said normal position into impingement with said protruding portion of said part to extract said part from said mold and means for carrying said part away from said extracting station.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 77 words
An apparatus for compression molding articles according to claim 1 wherein said first indexing means comprises a first circular, driven table having a plurality of support members foR receiving said carrier means and said second indexing means comprises a second, circular driven table having a second plurality of support members for receiving said carrier members, said first, said second table and said translating means having a common driving unit to provide cooperative interaction of said indexing means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 151 words
An apparatus for compression molding parts according to claim 1 wherein said translating means comprises first and second frame members, carrier arms operatively connected to said frame members, support stations for said carrier means superjacent said carrier arms, drive means connected to said carrier arms for reciprocating said arms from a forward position, extending subjacent one of said support members on said second indexing means, to a back position, extending subjacent one of said support members on said first indexing means, means for alternately, vertically moving said carrier arms into and out-of lifting contact with said carrier means on said stations, whereby reciprocation and vertical movement of said first carrier arm sequentially translates said carrier means from said first indexing means onto said second indexing means and reciprocation and vertical movement of said second carrier arm sequentially translates said carrier means from said second indexing means to said first indexing means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 39 words
An apparatus for compression molding articles according to claim 5 wherein said translating means further comprises means for closing and locking sad carrier means under molding pressure before said carrier means are sequentially translated to said second indexing means.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 40 words
An apparatus for compression molding articles according to claim 6 wherein said translating means further comprises means for unlocking said carrier means and removing a molded part therefrom before said carrier means are sequentially translated to said first indexing means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 51 words
An apparatus for compression molding articles according to claim 7 wherein said vertical moving means and said drive means on said carrier arms are actuated in response to motion of said first and second indexing means to provide cooperative interaction between said first and second indexing means and said translating means.
