Abstract
Abstract 6-Acylamidopenicillanic acid-1-oxides can unexpectedly be directly rearranged to 7-acylamido-3-methylceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acid without the necessity of first esterifying the 3-carboxyl function of the penicillin. For example, the rearrangement can be affected by treating 6-phenoxyacetamidopenicillanic acid sulfoxide with pyridine-di(phosphoric acid) complex (salt) to produce 7-phenoxy-acetamido-3-methylceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acid in 36 percent yield.
