Abstract

Abstract A grooved hoist drum is formed from a steel pipe mounted in a turning lathe. A carbon torch unit is mounted on the lathe carriage with the carbon electrode aligned with the periphery of the drum generally at the horizontal plane through the drum axis. An air jet is projected to the top of the arc to remove the molten metal. An electrode feed control is also mounted on the carriage and actuates the carbon electrode to maintain a constant arc voltage. A separate power supply and an air supply is connected to the torch unit, with the power return made directly to the chuck shaft, to strike the arc and establish the removing air jet. The simultaneous rotation of the drum and the traversing of the carriage produces a grooved drum with the groove surface in a hardened finished state.
