Abstract

Abstract A hydrodynamic torque converter having a rotating casing enclosing a work chamber which includes a turbine member, a reaction member and a pump member. At least one of the turbine member or a radial extension of the turbine output shaft but preferably the turbine member, is movable axially for engagement or disengagement with the other to thereby engage the turbine member to or release it from the turbine shaft. The turbine shaft extension may further engage the rotating casing for direct drive. Movement of the turbine member and/or the turbine shaft extension between the various operating positions is brought about by means of pressure differentials across these members, which members thereby serve as servo-piston elements.
