Abstract
Abstract WHEREIN R is a primary alkyl group and each R1 is the same or different and is a primary alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkaryl group or an aralkyl group, comprises heating a dithiophosphoric acid at a temperature of at least 120*C. until the acid value has fallen to a level of from 10 to 70 mg.KOH/g. and thereafter neutralising the reaction mixture. Also described are lubricating compositions containing the trithiopyrophosphates as antioxidants and load-carrying additives. A process for preparing a trithiopyrophosphate or mixture thereof of the general formula:
