Abstract

Abstract A neurosurgical sponge has an inner, highly absorbent nonwoven layer. A porous, nonwoven laminate is wrapped about the inner layer with the cut edges folded underneath the folded end. A piece of x-ray detectable material is inserted between the two layers and the layers are stitched or heat sealed together.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 62 words
A surgical sponge which comprises an inner layer of highly absorbent nonwoven sponge material, an outer layer of fluid pervious porous nonwoven material wrapped about said inner layer, said outer layer being a double thick laminate fabricated from a single folded sheet, the cut edges of which are placed under the folded edge, and means to join said inner and outer layers.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 62 words
A surgical sponge which comprises an inner layer of highly absorbent nonwoven sponge material, an outer layer of fluid pervious porous nonwoven material wrapped about said inner layer, said outer layer being a double thick laminate fabricated from a single folded sheet, the cut edges of which are placed under the folded edge, and means to join said inner and outer layers.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
The surgical sponge of claim 1 wherein said joining means comprises heat sealing the layers.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
The sponge of claim 1 wherein said joining means comprises sewing the layers.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
The sponge of claim 1 wherein said outer layer is fabricated from polypropylene.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
The sponge of claim 1 wherein a piece of x-ray detector indicator material is included between the inner and outer layers.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 68 words
A surgical sponge which comprises an inner layer of nonwoven, highly absorbent material such as cotton, an outer double thick laminate of nonwoven fluid pervious porous material such as polyethylene wrapped about said inner layer, said outer layer fabricated from a single folded sheet the cut edges of which are placed under the folded edge, said inner and outer layers being joined by zigzag stitch of surgical thread.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 68 words
A surgical sponge which comprises an inner layer of nonwoven, highly absorbent material such as cotton, an outer double thick laminate of nonwoven fluid pervious porous material such as polyethylene wrapped about said inner layer, said outer layer fabricated from a single folded sheet the cut edges of which are placed under the folded edge, said inner and outer layers being joined by zigzag stitch of surgical thread.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
The surgical sponge of claim 6 wherein a piece of x-ray indicator material is included between the inner and outer layers.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 68 words
A method of producing neurosurgical sponges including taking a layer of nonwoven highly absorbent surgical sponge material, taking a layer of nonwoven fluid pervious porous material, folding said porous layer, wrapping the folded porous layer about the sponge material layer with the cut edges of the porous layer inserted under the folded edge of the porous layer, and joining the layers in a manner acceptable for surgical uses.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 68 words
A method of producing neurosurgical sponges including taking a layer of nonwoven highly absorbent surgical sponge material, taking a layer of nonwoven fluid pervious porous material, folding said porous layer, wrapping the folded porous layer about the sponge material layer with the cut edges of the porous layer inserted under the folded edge of the porous layer, and joining the layers in a manner acceptable for surgical uses.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 8 wherein the step of joining comprises stitching with a surgical thread.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 8 wherein the step of joining comprises heat sealing the layers.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 19 words
In the method of claim 8 the step of inserting a piece of x-ray detectable material between the layers.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 50 words
The method of claim 8 wherein the porous layers are run through a folder which folds it in half, running the folded layer through a second folder and simultaneously feeding the absorbent layer and x-ray detectable material such that the second folder wraps the porous layer about the absorbent layer.
