Abstract
Abstract A container sealing lid particularly adapted for use with a container having a lid supporting and sealing bead extending therearound adjacent the open top end thereof and which lid permits easy removal thereof from its container sealing relationship. The lid includes a bead receiving groove integral therewith which is comprised of an inner wall, a top wall and an outer wall. A zone of reduced wall thickness at the area of the groove joining the top and outer walls permits the outer wall to be torn by hand from its connection with the top wall to thus facilitate lid removal. Elongated slots disposed at spaced intervals around the outer wall provide convenient means for starting the tearing action.

A molded plastic container lid for sealing an open top container including a peripheral wall having a top edge and provided with an outwardly projecting peripheral sealing bead, said lid including a covering portion terminating in an inverted generally U-shaped peripheral groove defined by radially spaced inner and outer peripheral walls adapted to receive said container wall and sealing bead therebetween and a top wall interconnecting said inner and outer walls and spanning said top edge of said container wall, said outer wall having a bottom edge spaced below said peripheral sealing bead and a peripheral projection extending radially inwardly beneath said sealing bead for retaining said lid on said container, said outer and top walls having an area of reduced thickness at the juncture therebetween providing a severance line extending peripherally of said groove in a plane adjacent said top edge of said container wall, said outer wall having a plurality of peripherally narrow and peripherally spaced apart openings therethrough, each of said openings extending upwardly through said peripheral projection and having an upper edge spaced below said peripheral severance line and a lower edge spaced from said bottom edge of said outer wall, and means defining a line of severance in said outer wall extending from the upper edge of said opening toward said peripheral severance line.
