Abstract

Abstract 1. A method of forming a shaped, propellant charge having a sponge-like cellular structure which comprises incorporating in a colloided nitrocellulose composition a solvent for an inert gas, placing the said composition in a suitable mold, subjecting said composition to an atmosphere of inert gas at elevated pressures and to heat not exceeding 65*C, and then releasing the gaseous pressure whereby the explosive composition is expanded to form a unitary, spongy structure substantially in the form of the mold.

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 78 words
A METHOD OF FORMING A SHAPED. PROPELLANT CHARGE HAVING A SPONGE-LIKE CELLULAR STRUCTURE WHICH COMPRISES INCORPORATING IN A COLLOIDED NITROCELLULOSE COMPOSITION A SOLVENT FOR AN INERT GS, PLACING THE SAID COMPOSITION IN A SUITABLE MOLD, SUBJECTING SAID COMPOSITION TO AN ATMOSPHERE OF INERT GAS AT ELEVATEF PRESSURES AND TO HEAT NOT EXCEEDING 60*C, AND THEN RELEASING THE GASEOUS PRESSURE WHEREBY THE EXPLOSIVE COMPOSITION IS EXPANDED TO FORM A UNITARY, SPONGY STRUCTURE SUBSTANTIALLY IN THE FORM OF THE MOLD.
Claim 2

Claim 3
Independent Claim 82 words
A method of forming a shaped, propellant charge which comprises incorporating in a colloided nitrocellulose composition an alkyl acetate as a solvent for a gas which is inert to said composition, placing the said composition in a suitable mold, subjecting said composition to an atmosphere of inert gas at elevated pressures and to heat not exceeding 65*C, and then releasing the gaseous pressure whereby the explosive composition is expanded to form a unitary, spongy structure substantially in the form of the mold.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 82 words
A method of forming a shaped, propellant charge which comprises incorporating in a colloided nitrocellulose composition an alkyl acetate as a solvent for a gas which is inert to said composition, placing the said composition in a suitable mold, subjecting said composition to an atmosphere of inert gas at elevated pressures and to heat not exceeding 65*C, and then releasing the gaseous pressure whereby the explosive composition is expanded to form a unitary, spongy structure substantially in the form of the mold.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
The method recited in claim 2 wherein said alkyl acetate is ethyl acetate.
