Abstract A PROCESS FOR THE BIOLOGICAL DENITRIFICATION OF WATER THAT CONTAINS SOLUBLE NITRATES IS DISCLOSED. IN THE PROCESS, THE WATER IS CONTACTED WITH ANAEROBIC BACTERIA AND A NORMALLY GASEOUS C1 TO C3 HYDROCARBON FOR A TIME SUFFICIENT TO DEGRADE THE NITRATE IONS, BIOLOGICALLY, TO INNOCUOUS NITROGEN.
