Abstract
Abstract A programmable patient simulator for teaching maternity patient care includes a life size manikin with a pelvis, vaginal canal, uterus, placenta, umbilical cord, and a fetal doll from which heart sounds are emitted. A programmable electro-pneumatic system controls the simulated uterine contractions, position of the uterus, rupture of membranes, expulsion of fetal doll, and fetal heart rate during labor and delivery sequence. The invention described herein was made in the course of work under a grant or award from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
107 words
A training device of the type used in teaching maternity patient care comprising, a fetal doll adapted to be placed in and later forced from a simulated uterus by controlled contraction of the uterus, said doll having substantially the true proportions of a human fetus and being covered with a skin portion, said doll including a skull portion formed of a layer of semi-rigid plastic with a mass of additional semi-rigid plastic at the lower region of the skull portion, and a simulated spinal member disposed in the body portion of said doll and connected to said mass of additional plastic by means of a ball joint.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
35 words
A fetal doll as defined in claim 1 having anterior and posterior fontanels formed in said layer and with a mass of readily deformable plastic interposed between said fontanels and the mass of semi-rigid plastic.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
28 words
A fetal doll as defined in claim 1 including a speaker disposed in the chest region thereof and having an electrical conductor extending therefrom exteriorly of said doll.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
21 words
A fetal doll as defined in claim 3 including a simulated umbilical cord extending from said doll and housing said conductor.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
19 words
A fetal doll as defined in claim 1 wherein said skin portion is pigmented to closely resemble human skin.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
25 words
A fetal doll as defined in claim 1 including a body portion and arm and leg portions filled with a mass of readily deformable plastic.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
27 words
A fetal doll as defined in claim 2 including means for selectively opening the body portion at the back in order to provide access to said speaker.
