Abstract

Abstract An arc-seam welding procedure to join two thin sheets in ''T'' relationship wherein two infrared sensors disposed on opposite sides of the vertical member detect any welding puddle heat unbalance from the underside. An unbalance signal from the sensors moves the welding heat source transversely across the puddle during its progressive movement along the joint, to restore the heat balance on the other side of the joint. The arangement avoids the need for costly chill bars, and is especially suitable where the vertical member is corrugated or sinusoidal in plan view.
