Abstract

Abstract A conjugated diene polymer having a high cis-1,4 configuration content and having a high molecular weight can advantageously be produced by homopolymerizing or copolymerizing at least one conjugated diene or copolymerizing at least one conjugated diene with at least one vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon with a catalyst consisting essentially of at least one organolithium compound and at least one aliphatic nitrile in a proportion of 0.01 to 1.0 mole of the aliphatic nitrile per carbon-linked lithium atom and optionally carbon disulfide as promoter. The vulcanizate of said polymer of isoprene is very similar in physical properties to that of a natural Hevea rubber.
